Headed North The Old Way Of course, finding your way along those twisting, winding back channels nowadays is easy - you just put your nice little color GPS plotter up by the compass and away you go.. But nowhere as fun as the traditional way - with those nice old paper charts with notations from previous voyages, and just the FUN of looking and imaging - "What if we went in there?" Etc. Plus there is this really cool book - the Hansen Handbook - which shows you the way to Alaska, point by point, with all these nifty drawings! Some fishermen used the book exclusively to get to Alaska, and don't even have Canadian charts aboard! The only problem with that is if someone on watch makes a wrong turn...

The original Hansen Handbook is long out of print, but Captains Nautical Supplies in Seattle, makes a really nice spiral bound reprint... |
